If Michael Gartner is so indispensable to the state university system that his resignation would throw it "back for another 20 years," as he says it would, perhaps we should do away with the Iowa Board of Regents altogether ("Gartner Cites 'Lynch-Mob Mentality'," Dec. 14).

Gartner could then simply appoint himself president of the University of Iowa, provost of Iowa State University, and dean of the University of Northern Iowa.

But why stop there? Let's go ahead and dismiss the faculties and staffs of the state schools that are apparently not as crucial to their operation as this one "brilliant" man. It is incredible that these institutions were ever able to function before Gartner's selection to the board. How will they ever survive after he's gone?
