At a time when the Iowa
state Board of Regents faces "no confidence" votes by the University of
Iowa faculty, staff and student senates, the regents announced that they
will be condensing their December meeting in Iowa City to a one-day affair
in which some of the regents may participate by telephone. Members of the
UI community continue to express concern over the manner in which the regents
dissolved the UI presidential search committee and rejected all the finalists
put forward by the committee. Although spokespersons for Gov. Tom Vilsack
said the governor is not likely to get involved in the matter, we think
he should look into whether the regents' recent rolling meeting violated
Iowa's Open Meetings law.
