No regents nominated for U of I panel

The group that will conduct the university's presidential search apparently won't have any undergrads, either.

Iowa City, Ia. — Neither undergraduate students nor Iowa Board of Regents members are likely to serve on the University of Iowa's new presidential search committee.

The board will vote in a conference call today on nominations for the remainder of a 13-member search panel that will interview presidential candidates and choose finalists. Committee Chairman David Johnsen, dean of the U of I College of Dentistry, said he would like the regents to select a new leader by July 1.

The regents will consider seven nominees for the search committee. They are: Elizabeth Chrischilles, epidemiology professor; Sarah England, physiology and biophysics associate professor; Ed Folsom, English professor; Gene Parkin, civil-environmental engineering professor; Jarjisu Sa-Aadu, finance professor; Cheryl Reardon, assistant to the dean/vice president for research; and Sarah Vigmostad, graduate student in biomedical engineering.

The regents on Jan. 11 approved five others for the committee. They are: Jonathan Carlson, law professor; Lee Anna Clark, psychology professor; Leonard Hadley, retired chairman and CEO of Maytag Corp.; Linda Maxson, dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences; and Dr. Paul Rothman, medicine professor.

Regents are notably absent from the committee - a reversal from last spring when the regents named four from their ranks to serve on an 18-member search committee. That committee was disbanded in November after the regents rejected four finalists chosen by the panel. The failed search caused campus groups to vote overwhelmingly in favor of resolutions of no confidence in the regents leaders.

Undergraduate students are also excluded from the new panel, but student leaders said Vigmostad would be an advocate for students of all levels.

"I'm disappointed there will not be a broader cross section of students," said Addison Stark, student government vice president and a Clinton native.

"But Sarah will be a great representative of all students."
