IOWA CITY — A state legislative leader wants all nine state regents to resign because of the failed University of Iowa presidential search.

‘‘And then it would allow Gov. elect (Chet) Culver to look at those and kind of start from’’ scratch, state Sen. Bob Dvorsky, D-Coralville, said Friday. He will chair the Senate Appropriations Committee next legislative session.

State Rep. Dave Jacoby, D-Coralville, said a change is necessary after what he called a ‘‘botched’’ search but was unsure whether the entire board should resign or just its two leaders, Regents President Michael Gartner and President Pro Tem Teresa Wahlert.

The regents said Thursday the search would start over after their preferred candidate withdrew from consideration.

Thursday night, the Johnson County Democrats Central Committee, the decision-making body of the party in the UI’s heavily Democratic home county, called on Gov. Tom Vilsack to immediately demand resignations from Gartner and Wahlert.

It also said the new search should be campus- led, asked Culver to convene an independent panel to investigate regents’ practices and called for the Attorney General’s Office to investigate whether the regents have violated Iowa’s open-meetings law.
