In question is the governance style and in particular the handling of the University of Iowa president search. After seven months and $200,000 that search ended with regents rejecting four finalists. The search is back under way with a new search committee.
The 86-year-old association endorsed the UI Faculty Senate's no-confidence vote adopted Dec. 12. It also requested that an elected faculty member be placed on all governing boards in a move for more shared governance, and urged all parties to renew a pledge to the Statement on College and University Government, originally adopted in 1966. The state encourages among other things shared governance.
Other groups that have formally called out Regent President Michael Gartner, of Des Moines, and Regent President Pro-tem Teresa Wahlert, of Waukee, include University of Iowa Student Government, Staff Council, College of Liberal Arts and Sciences Faculty Assembly, Graduate Student Senate and the Johnson County Democrats.
