IOWA CITY — The University of Iowa Foundation took in more than $44 million in outright gifts and future gifts for the athletics department — a school record — in the 2006 fiscal year, according to figures released Thursday afternoon.

The school received more than $20 million in outright gifts, which includes nearly $5 million for Kinnick Stadium. Nearly $13 million was donated toward scholarships and other funds.

‘‘The $20 million-plus ranks in the top half of the Big Ten, which we’re very pleased with that,’’ said Mark Jennings, Iowa’s associate athletics director for development, patron services and special events.

The department cleaned up in future gifts, with nearly $24 million in donations. That includes $18 million in pledges and $4.3 million in deferred gifts. The Foundation also had a record 13,636 households give a total of 24,691 contributions. In other news, Jennings said the department hopes to raise $10 million in a ‘‘fullscale campaign’’ for private contributions to refurbish Carver- Hawkeye Arena, a project that could cost as much as $40 million. The department hopes to hire an architect by the end of February, but no timetable for completion is set. For two other projects — renovation at the Jacobson Athletic Building and construction of a boat house for the rowing team — Jennings said he will target donors, rather than solicit contributions through a mass effort. He said the department has received a major gift for the boat house construction.

Jennings said all suites and club seats — indoor and outdoor — at Kinnick Stadium are sold for the 2007 football season.
