Don't gamble with the UI image

In regards to Stan Miller's Jan. 29 letter ("UI and Lottery shouldn't mix"), I would like to express my agreement. The University of Iowa Athletics Department should not license its logos to the Iowa Lottery. First of all, the Lottery is a form of gambling, and gambling and sports should not mix; in professional sports, athletes are banned from competing if they have links to gambling.

In addition, the lottery is essentially a regressive tax, with particular attraction for the people who can afford it least; the lure of something for nothing is often difficult to resist. This association would reflect poorly on the university as a whole.
