The Iowa rain forest backers spent $69,500 on lobbying to leverage the $50 million in a federal grant ("Rain Forest Plan Ended 2003 in Red," Aug. 8).

Sentaor Charles Grassley knows how I feel about this grant because I spoke with his office several times and wrote e-mails. My lobbying expenses against this handout (about $20 in phone bills) just weren't nearly enough.

I don't know how I'm going to be able to afford to keep Senator Grassley in my employ. His vote is just too expensive.
