(1) Because of the current Board's allocation of responsibilities between Board and staff in its governance policies the Board encourages the resolution of individuals' complaints and concerns as close to the problem as possible. For example, if the issue involves parents of a student, the most productive place to begin is with the student's teacher. If it cannot be resolved there, the teacher's principal should be consulted. Failing resolution with the principal, the matter should be taken to the Superintendent. In most cases that will be the final appeal unless the concern is that either (a) a current Board policy has been violated, or (b) there is a need for a new Board policy. This appeals procedure does not mean that stakeholders should be reluctant to inform Board members of their concerns, only that they should not expect resolution by individual Board members in the first instance.
(2) Given the volume of stakeholder communications received
by Board members, you will probably find e-mail to be the most efficient
means of communication -- for you and for them. Board members are not always
able to take phone calls, and you may end up leaving messages on answering
machines or voice mail. Most Board members do not have secretarial assistance
available for conventional postal mail. However, they would prefer to hear
from you by whatever means is most convenient for you rather than not to
hear at all.
